The Codex Gigas, also famously known as the "Devil's Bible," is the largest extant medieval manuscript in the world. Created in the early 13th century in a Benedictine monastery in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic), it is renowned for its massive size and a striking full-page illustration of the devil.
Quick Facts
Size: It is roughly 92 cm (36 inches) tall and weighs about 75 kg (165 lbs), requiring two people to lift it.
The Legend: Folklore suggests a monk wrote the entire book in a single night with the help of the devil to avoid execution for breaking his monastic vows.
Content: It is a "compendium of knowledge," containing the entire Latin Bible, medical treatises, historical records (The Chronicle of Bohemia), and various magical spells.
Materials: It was created using the skins of approximately 160 donkeys or calves.
